BENNINGTON POTTERY AND PORCELAINby Richard Carter Barret, Bonanza Books, 1958.
Over 450 photographs including seven color plates illustrate over 2,000 Bennington pottery and porcelain items including descriptions. The profuse illustrations and rich narrative combine to make this early out-of-print book an invaluable resource reference for the serious collector, dealer, or historian of antique Bennington pottery and porcelain.
This early out-of-print text “is the first complete book on the dozen or more types of ceramic wares made in Bennington, Vermont, during the nineteenth century….The 2000 examples illustrated include such functional items as pitchers, table ware, kitchen and household articles as well as decorative and Victorian fancy articles—vases, ewers, cologne bottles, trinket boxes, statuettes, animal and bird figures and novelty items. The various Bennington wares include redware, stoneware, Rockingham flint enamel, scroddled ware, granite-ware, common white, common yellow, mortar ware, Parian porcelain, white porcelain and colored porcelain.” 450 halftone photos and 7 color plates vividly illustrate the pottery and porcelain production of Bennington’s two ceramics works. “The informative commentary includes a history of the development of the potteries, chief identification factos, indications as to scarcity and major points of comparison between Bennington products and similar pieces made elsewhere, and listing and illustrations of all known marks.” The book contains two sections: “Functional Items,” and “Fancy Articles,” plus indices of illustrations and their titles. This is a must-buy book for the collector, dealer, or historian of early American pottery and porcelain.
